School Without Walls has a daily tradition, the morning announcements. These student-held announcements occur during second period and typically last around 2-3 minutes. On the announcements, the students discuss: the word of the day, upcoming events, sports announcements, fundraisers, spirit events, and more.

There are many benefits that come with doing the announcements. Imani Nesbeth (‘25) said her favorite part of doing the morning announcements is, “Saying my name, just so that the whole school would know that I was doing the announcements.” She also shares that, “during class it can be hard to hear the announcements so reading it really makes sure you know about everything happening that day.”

Phoebe Sebar (‘25) added that her favorite part about doing the morning announcements is “The performative aspect of it [...] Any opportunity to do some performance type thing is fun for me.” The morning announcements are a fun opportunity to be a fun way to express yourself and be creative.

Along with doing the morning announcements can come some funny stories. Imani Nesbeth (‘25) explains, “One time I was doing the morning announcements with Lexi, and it was a little bit messy and we were laughing. We also didn’t know how to pronounce certain words, like the word of the day, and we were just giggling the whole time.” According to Nesbeth, the Walls administration was less amused. They were, “not feeling it, and so we have never done them together since.”

The announcements, while only a small part of the school day, are very important in order to keep students engaged with the school. Colette Gregg (‘24) explained that “Students have a firsthand experience at everything at the school and so having them involved with school activities and things like that is good for school spirit.”

Imani Nesbeth (‘25) also explained that “You get connected to the people in the office, so like sometimes you will see students back there and it's actually a lot of fun when you get to know them and when they let you back there you get to see the whole entire office. It also helps to build connections with the whole administration which is really helpful especially if you want a recommendation.”

The morning announcements have open sign-ups for any student at Walls who wants to read them. If students are interested in doing so, you can sign your name on the sign-up sheet at the front office. You will first need to write down your announcement on a piece of paper. Next, you will need to get your club leader, team captain, or whoever is in charge to sign off on your announcement. When asked if she would recommend reading the morning announcements, Imani Nesbeth says, “Yes one hundred percent! I'd say especially if you're a freshman you should definitely do it because it gets your name out.”
